How to set goals for your business

 

Last week, I sat down with a pen, paper and a blank Google Doc to prepare myself for what’s to come in 2018. Where do I want to be by the end of 2018, what am I looking to accomplish exactly and how in the heck am I going to get there.

It was hard, and it was a ridiculously long process, but by the end of the week, I was 3 pages full of goals for the year (including several tasks to accomplish to get me there).

Setting goals is never easy. If it were, there would be a ton of small successful businesses everywhere you looked.

What are goals good for?

I used to think I could just do whatever I wanted without putting much thought into it and I would be well on my way to success. Like I could write a blog post, hit publish and millions of people would stumble upon my post, flood it with comments and turn me into an overnight success.

While it probably has happen for very few bloggers out there, often times, no one really puts much thought into blogs or businesses with no set plan to succeed.

 

So why would you need to set goals exactly?

  1. It holds you accountable;

  2. It is motivating;

  3. It absolutely feels good;

  4. It shows your progress;

 

How can you set your goals (the right way)?

Start by finding out why you are setting goals in the first place. This should be the reason your starting your business. Whether that’s to make sales, grow following, just for fun, etc. You should know why you are looking to do what you do.

Once you have your why, you should be able to figure out where you want to be long term. Where do you want to be a year from now? Below are just a few examples.

  • I want to reach $50,000 income by the end of the year
  • I want to reach a 1000 followers on my instagram account
  • I want other creative entrepreneurs to think I’m the expert in my field of business.

Next, you’ll want to break those goals down even more into ‘mini goals’, or in other words, ‘objectives’.

Just a few examples of questions you can ask yourself to help you figure out how to break up all your major goals into mini ones...

  • What steps can you take to reach this major goal?
  • What obstacles will be in your way and how will you overcome them?
  • How many of your products or services do you need to sell in order to reach this goal?
  • How many new clients or customers do you need in order to reach this goal?
  • Do you need to write a certain number of blog posts/appear on podcasts/present webinars/etc to achieve this goal? If so, how many?
  • Etc.

 

Make sure you’re setting S.M.A.R.T. goals

Specific

Vague details won’t get you anywhere. Be as specific as you can. Try answering who, what, when, where, how questions.

Measurable

How are you going to track your progress? Make sure to include numbers so you can keep track of your growth.

Attainable

Make sure you’re not setting yourself up for failure. Figure out what

Relevant

Are the goals your setting, things that your audience would even like or want? Make sure you are not putting all your hard work into a product or service if you’re audience doesn’t actually want it.

Timely

When are you looking to achieve it? Make sure you're setting specific dates or times.
